Application of Benson Relaxation Therapy to Reduce Anxiety in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease Undergoing Hemodialysis

Abstract

Introduction: Patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis may experience psychological problems, one of which is anxiety. Benson relaxation is a non-pharmacological therapy that may help patients feel calmer and more relaxed through relaxation techniques combined with religious elements.

Objective: To describe the application of Benson relaxation therapy on anxiety levels in patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis.

Method: This study used a descriptive method with a case study approach. Five respondents were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Benson relaxation therapy was administered for 10–15 minutes. Anxiety levels were measured before and after the intervention using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). The study was conducted at Roemani Muhammadiyah Hospital, Semarang.

Result: After receiving Benson relaxation therapy, 3 out of 5 respondents experienced a decrease in anxiety levels from the moderate category (22–35) to the mild category (0–21), while 2 respondents experienced a decrease from the severe category (>36) to the moderate category (22–35).

Conclusion: The application of Benson relaxation therapy showed a decrease in anxiety levels among patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis. Benson relaxation therapy can be used as one of the non-pharmacological interventions to help reduce anxiety in hemodialysis patients.
