Background: The utilization of natural ingredients in traditional midwifery practices is part of local wisdom passed down through generations in rural Indonesian communities. However, modernization of healthcare services has led to a decline in mothers' knowledge about the use of natural ingredients. This phenomenon has not been extensively studied in South Sulawesi, particularly in Soppeng Regency.
Objective: This study aims to explore the lived experiences, perceptions, and subjective meanings of mothers regarding the utilization of natural ingredients in traditional midwifery practices in Timusu Village, Soppeng Regency.
Methods: This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive phenomenological design. Participants were selected through purposive sampling with criteria: having used natural ingredients in pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, or infant care; willingness to share experiences; and residing in Timusu Village for at least 5 years. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. Data analysis used Colaizzi's method with seven systematic stages. Research trustworthiness was ensured through credibility, dependability, confirmability, and transferability.
Results: Thematic analysis yielded four main themes: (1) Knowledge about natural ingredients passed down through generations; (2) Experiences of using natural ingredients for postpartum care, post-childbirth recovery, and infant care; (3) Perceived meanings of comfort, naturalness, and cultural attachment; and (4) Barriers in practice including lack of written information, modernization influences, and limited scientific knowledge. The essence of experience shows that this practice is a manifestation of family love, respect for ancestors, and cultural identity that is still maintained despite modernization challenges.
Conclusion: Mothers' knowledge about the utilization of natural ingredients in traditional midwifery persists but is limited to generational inheritance. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding mothers' cultural practices, culturally sensitive midwifery communication, safety education on natural ingredients, and further research to assess clinical effectiveness and safety.
